Government mulls ordinance to amend cable TV Act
New Delhi: The government may bring in an Ordinance amending the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, which would ensure the smooth roll out of the conditional access system (CAS) and also regulate the broadcasters.

At present only cable operators can be punished for violations and not broadcasters.

Sources say, the proposed legislation will ensure that pay channels remain free-to-air (FTA) in accordance with the rollout plan announced earlier. Also, a cap on advertising time on pay channels is being considered.

The Government had received proposals suggesting that advertising time should be capped at 3 per cent of the total airtime.
