Dumping
duty on vitamin C imports from US, Canada
New Delhi: The designated authority in the commerce
ministry has extended the imposing of anti-dumping duty
on imports of vitamin-C from the US and Canada. This move
comes after it was imposed against Japan, China, the European
Union and Russia. And it also follows a petition from
Sarabhai M Chemicals, a unit of Ambalal Sarabhai Enterprises,
Baroda, alleging dumping of the product by the US and
Canada.
The local industry had also provided detailed information
to the authority clearly establishing that it had suffered
severe injury due to the significant increase in imports
of vitamin C in absolute terms from the two countries
and the rise in the share of imports from them in relation
to demand in India. After considering these representations,
the authority concluded that vitamin C originating in
the US and Canada has been exported to India below normal
value. "This has resulted in dumping because of which
the domestic industry has suffered material injury and
that the injury has been caused cumulatively by imports
from these countries." It therefore considered it
necessary to impose definitive anti-dumping duty on the
product in question.
