Wipro
first quarter net up 43 per cent
Bangalore: Wipro today reported a 43 per cent rise
in its net profit for the first quarter of 2003-2004 at
Rs 206 crore over the corresponding quarter of the previous
fiscal.
Announcing
results for the first quarter ending June 30, 2003, the
company said its revenue grew by 29 per cent at Rs 1,198.90
crore year on year.

BSNL,
MTNL to retain ISD rates
New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) have decided to continue
with their existing tariff rates, which are between 24
per cent and 33 per cent more expensive.
According
to official sources, both the companies have decided not
to tamper with their ISD call charges since their revenue
margins are already taking a big hit because of the increasing
competition.

Government
seeks more clarification from Star
New Delhi: A day after extending Star News to uplink
from India for another week, officials in the information
and broadcasting (I&B) ministry said they are not
so sure about Star's share owning pattern.
"We
are not satisfied with many of the answers by Star"
a ministry official said, when asked about the Rupert
Murdoch affiliate's explanatory note on Media Content
and Communication Services Ltd , its uplinking company,
submitted to the government on Wednesday.

Paints to shift corporate office to Mumbai
Kolkata: Shalimar Paints Ltd has announced plans
to shift its corporate office from Kolkata to Mumbai by
December this year. The company's registered office will,
however, continue to remain in Kolkata, according to Mr
S.L. Agarwal, Managing Director of Shalimar Paints Ltd.

SRF
to consider hydro fluorocarbon investment plan
New Delhi: The board of directors of SRF Ltd are
to meet today to consider a proposal for investment of
Rs 40 crore for manufacture of hydro fluorocarbon.
SRF's
chemical business produces fluorochemicals and chloromethanes.
Fluorochemicals accounted for revenues of Rs 133 crore
in 2001-02.

HLL's
Kolkata unit lockout challenged
Kolkata: Hindustan Lever Sramik Karmachari Congress
filed a writ petition in Calcutta High Court challenging
the lockout at its Kolkata Garden Reach unit.
The
union asked for a court order directing the State Government
to declare the lockout illegal.
In
the writ petition, it was stated that the lockout order
had been declared in violation of the I.D. Act 1947.
