TRAI
lets basic operators to offer SMS
New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) has said that basic service providers, including
limited mobility (WLL), are allowed to offer the facility
of short-messaging service (SMS) to their subscribers.
"After considering the background information, licence
terms and conditions, it has been decided that basic service
licensees could provide SMS."
Since
WLL operators, as of now, hold a basic service licence
they too will be allowed to offer the services, which
has never been clarified by the authority despite repeated
requests. Reports suggest that while Reliance Infocomm
started offering the service since the commercial launch,
Tata Teleservcies waited for close to 10 months for the
TRAI approval, before deciding to start offering it to
its subscribers.
