Jalan nominated to Parliament

Reserve Bank of India governor, Bimal Jalan, has been nominated to the upper house of Parliament, a government statement said on Thursday.

An economist by profession, Jalan, 62, had worked as executive director representing India on the board of the IMF and World Bank. He took over the reins of the Reserve Bank of India, the Indian central bank in November 1997 at the height of the Asian financial crisis.

India's constitution gives the president the power to nominate 12 prominent citizens who have special knowledge or practical experience in the fields of literature, science, arts and social service to the upper house of Parliament.
