Jalan nominated to Parliament
Reserve Bank of India governor, Bimal Jalan, has been
nominated to the upper house of Parliament, a government
statement said on Thursday.
An
economist by profession, Jalan, 62, had worked as executive
director representing India on the board of the IMF and
World Bank. He took over the reins of the Reserve Bank
of India, the Indian central bank in November 1997 at
the height of the Asian financial crisis.
India's
constitution gives the president the power to nominate
12 prominent citizens who have special knowledge or practical
experience in the fields of literature, science, arts
and social service to the upper house of Parliament.
