enquiries boost Nilgiris tea trade
Wellington:In spite of falling prices, there have
been enquiries to import teas - albeit plain-made teas
from the Nilgiris at higher than the current market rate.
Industry sources said that buyers from Malaysia are currently
visiting the region to source Nilgiri teas. "Enquiries
from the Malaysian buyers have come in the wake of news
that tea prices in the Nilgiris are ruling at very low
levels," a broker said.

May Face Stringent US Riders On Defence Purchases
Mumbai:India's
refusal to send troops to Iraq could have a strong fall-out
in the form of stringent riders being attached to defence
purchases from the US.
Though
there is no such clause in the present US defence export
guidelines, it has introduced with immediate effect these
provisions starting with India, the Defence Policy Group
was told in Washington last month.

Marginal
rise in net direct tax revenues
New Delhi:The declining trend in net direct tax
collections this year, courtesy the Finance Ministry's
decision to clear refund dues to assessees at the earliest,
has finally been stemmed.
During
April-August 2003, the Centre's net corporation and income-tax
collections after refunds have been estimated at Rs 14,530
crore, marginally higher than the Rs 14,385 crore figure
for the corresponding five months period last year.
