SC puts the brakes on HPCL, BPCL sell-off
New Delhi: The ground-rules for public sector disinvestment have been re-written with the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruling that the Centre will have to take approval from Parliament for selling stakes in the two PSU oil majors - Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL). The ruling would impact all future disinvestment of PSUs nationalised or constituted through Acts of Parliament.

Verdict will have far-reaching impact: Shourie
New Delh: THE Government has said that the Supreme Court verdict on HPCL and BPCL would have far-reaching consequences for the sell-off process.

"It will have far-reaching consequences not only for disinvestment in these two PSUs but in other matters also," the Union Disinvestment Minister, Mr Arun Shourie, said from Berlin, Germany where he is on an official visit. There may be other PSUs not only at the Central level but also at the State level which were created through Legislative Acts and whose disinvestment would become ticklish in the light of the apex court judgment, Mr Shourie stated.

Mobile phones permitted in aircraft on ground
New Delhi: In an effort to make domestic air travel more passenger-friendly, the Government has permitted domestic airlines to allow passengers to use their mobile/cellular phones inside the aircraft, though only when it is on the ground.

In its first meeting, the Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to probe allegations of high levels of pesticides in soft drinks has decided to have three full-time advisors to guide the committee on the 'technical' aspects of the issue.
