Assembly orders arrest of The Hindu Editor, Publisher
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday ordered
the arrest of the publisher, editor, executive editor,
and two other senior journalists of The Hindu for an editorial
based on articles that was a "gross act of contempt
of the House as a whole" and a "gross act of
breach of privilege of the House as a whole".
N.
Ram, editor-in-chief, The Hindu, said the newspaper would
approach court to seek redress to get this action stayed.
"This has been a problem State for freedom of press.
This time they have picked the wrong target. They have
challenged a 125-year-old institution," he told a
crowded press conference.
The
decision of the privileges committee, read out by the
finance minister and leader of the House, C. Ponnaiyan,
was approved by a majority of the members of the Assembly
on Friday, the last day of the week-long monsoon session.
