DoT
proposes to cut number of STD codes
New Delhi: In order to simplify the clutter of
STD codes numbering 2,645 across India, the Department
of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed to cut them to
a mere 322. Official sources were quoted as saying that
while this will not make much of a difference to STD codes
in the four major metros and bigger cities, it is expected
to reduce the confusion that currently exists in the rest
of the country.
It
will also bring about a standardisation across the country,
a change from the current situation where STD codes in
some areas are two digits while they have three and four
digits each elsewhere.
