Govt
considers network fabrication facility
New Delhi: A nanotechnology proposal for a network
fabrication facility, which will explore a mixed scale
technology approach, is under consideration of the government,
principal scientific advisor to the government R Chidambaram
said. "Emergence of nanotechnology and nanodevices
is a window of opportunities as progress has been limited
in this area as opposed to that in the IT software segment."
"This
is intended to be a good starting point and will also
help create awareness and train manpower in this domain,"
he Chidambaram said. "This approach, when combined
with our rapidly growing economy and improving infrastructure,
would create conditions for a leading-edge semiconductor
manufacturing industry in India."

Plan
panel likely to submit budget estimates today
New Delhi: The Planning Commission has been unable
to meet the deadline of January 7 set by the finance ministry
for submitting Budget estimates of Plan and non-Plan expenditure,
says a press report. The commission hopes to submit at
least the estimates of Plan expenditure by today. According
to officials, the finance ministry's sudden demand for
getting the Budget estimates a month earlier than the
usual time frame has put theentire estimation process
in a turmoil.
The
commission has managed to hold consultations with just
a handful of ministries and will have to ignore demands
of most of the ministries and departments with whom discussions
have not yet taken place.
