Fund
to curb child labour in carpet units
New Delhi: The labour ministry will soon create
a fund to deal with the problem of child labour in the
carpet industry. The fund for the corpus will be collected
from the employers in the carpet weaving belt in Uttar
Pradesh and an equal portion will be contributed by the
government, labour secretary PD Shenoy has said.
Releasing
a book on 'Child labour in carpet industry: Impact of
social labelling' authored by Alakh N Sharma, Rajeev Sharma
and Nikhil Raj, Dr Shenoy said: "The initiative forms
part of the government strategy to improve the living
and working conditions of the weaving community by exerting
pressure on the exporters and suppliers to enforce fair
conditions, including prohibiting child labour in the
production of carpets".
