Hike
in free sale sugar quota for March
New
Delhi: Government has released 12 lakh tonnes of sugar
as quota for indigenous free sale for the month of March
2004 instead of 10 lakh tonnes as announced earlier. With
the actual release of 1.82 lakh tonnes of sugar as levy
quota for the month of March 2004 already, the total availability
of sugar during the month would be 13.82 lakh tonnes.
The
Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution
is monitoring the price and availability of sugar in the
country and with enough stock of sugar in hand is in a
position to release further substantial quantities additionally
if required.

Aluminium
production during April 2003-January 2004
New
Delhi: The Aluminium production in the country during
April 2003-January 2004 has been estimated at 6,80,006
tonnes against 5,62,255 tonnes during the same period
last year. Out of the total production, the public sector
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has produced
2,48,600 tonnes and Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO)
with 49 per cent Central Government Equity, produced 81,162
tonnes. The private sector Hindustan Aluminium Company
Limited (HINDALCO) contributed 2,68,929 tonnes followed
by Indian Aluminium Company Ltd. (INDAL) 54,478 tonnes
and Madras Aluminium Company Limited (MALCO) 26,837 tonnes.
During
January 2004, the total production of Aluminium was 64,220
tonnes. NALCO exported 70,726 tonnes of Alumina and 11,239
tonnes of Aluminium metal during the month.

SC
disposes plea against reduction
The
Supreme Court today disposed off a petition challenging
the government move to reduce Indian Institute of Management
fees.
A
three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice V N Khare dismissed
the plea on the grounds that the government had assured
compensation of the deficit to be incurred by IIMs, post
fee reduction.
