National
Bioscience award for Dr Ramesh Sonti
Hyderabad: Senior scientist at the Centre for Cellular
and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Dr Ramesh V. Sonti, has
been awarded the prestigious National Bio-science Award
for Career Development for the year 2003-04 from the Department
of Biotechnology (DBT), the Union Ministry of Science
and Technology.
According
to the CCMB the award is given annually to scientists
who are less than 45 years old and who have made outstanding
research contributions in bio-sciences and bio-technology
with potential for application/product and technology
development.
Dr
Ramesh Sonti has been given the award for his research
on understanding virulence mechanisms for the important
bacterial leaf blight pathogen of rice. His research has
also focussed on introduction of bacterial leaf blight
resistance characteristics into the background of commercially
important but disease susceptible rice varieties.
The
award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and
Rs 3 lakh per year for a period of three years as grant
from DBT to support Dr Sonti's ongoing research efforts.

Singh takes additional charge of IIBI
Kolkata: O.N. Singh, Chairman and Managing Director
of Allahabad Bank, will hold concurrent charge of the
post of CMD of Industrial Investment Bank of India Ltd
(IIBI), in addition to his present assignment, with effect
from March 1. He assumes charge of IIBI at a point when
the ailing financial institution is set to undergo a major
restructuring exercise.
