mobile industry to double
New Delhi: According to Mr. Jorma Ollila, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer, Nokia Corporation, the key
drivers of growth for the mobile phone service industry
worldwide would be India, Russia, China, Indonesia and
Brazil, who would account for over 80 per cent of global
mobile subscriber growth. The market in the next five
years is expected to double in size to around $ 1.5 trillion,
driven by emerging markets such as India and China.

TRAI
considering number portability
New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) proposes to issue a consultation paper on
number portability in a month's time, which would enable
customers to retain their telephone number even while
switching service providers or networks. It said that
it had already held discussions with access providers
on the issue of carrier access code, which would allow
users to choose their own long distance operator

Ecomtech
opens today in Mangalore
Mangalore: Ecomtech, a three-day exposition on
electronics, computers, and communication products and
services, will begin in Mangalore on March 5. A press
release by Nagarakar's Expositions, the organisers of
the event, stated here on Thursday that a spectrum of
consumer electronics, computer accessories, telephone
instruments and mobile handsets would be on display at
Ecomtech. Sony India Pvt Ltd and Reliance Infocom are
the sponsors of the event, the release added.

FICCI
team to visit Oman, UAE
New Delhi: A delegation of Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is visiting
Oman and UAE from March 5-10. Dr A.C. Muthiah, past President,
FICCI and the Chairman of India-UAE joint business council
(JBC) will lead a 19 member delegation to UAE, while Mr
Pradip Madhavji, Chairman India-Oman JBC will lead a 18-member
business delegation to Oman. The FICCI delegation will
consist of representatives from diverse sectors such as
information and communication technology, chemicals and
petrochemicals, biotechnology, fertilisers, oil and gas,
engineering, polymers, tourism, and engineering consultancy.
