Ranbaxy: Tentative USFDA approval for hypertension drug
New Delhi: Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd has received
tentative approval from the US Food and Drug Administration
(USFDA), Office of Generic Drugs, to manufacture and market
Quinapril Hydrochloride tablets used for the treatment
of hypertension.
Quinapril
Hydrochloride could be used alone or in combination with
thiazide diuretics.

L&T bags
its first contract in Bahrain
Mumbai: Larsen & Toubro has won its first contract
in Bahrain for the construction of a 15-storied hotel
and service apartments for the Radissons Group. According
to a news release from the engineering and construction
company the contract is worth Rs 70 crore.
The
release said that the contract complements the company's
growing list of engineering and construction projects
in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Jordan. Work
on the project has to be completed within 77 weeks.

bonus from Marico Industries
Mumbai: The board of Marico Industries Ltd has
declared a bonus issue in the ratio of one share for every
share held, aggregating Rs 29 crore. The board has also
recommended the third interim dividend of Rs 2.50 per
share of Rs 10 each. This will be the company's 12th interim
dividend in a row.
The
company has also offered an early redemption of 2.90 crore
eight per cent redeemable preference shares (RePS) of
Rs 10 each. These shares were to be redeemed at par on
or before October 1, 2005.
The
company has convened an extra ordinary general meeting
on April 21 to seek shareholders' approval for the bonus
issue.
Since March 31, 2003, Marico's market capitalisation has
increased by about 87 per cent from about Rs 425 crore
to about Rs 800 crore, the release said.

Getz,
Elantra launch plans on track: Hyundai
Chennai: Hyundai Motor India has said that its
new offering Elantra will be launched in the second quarter
of this calendar year while the Getz would cme out in
the third quarter. According to the company it hopes to
sell 1,000 units of the Elantra and 2,000 units of the
Getz every month.
While
the Elantra would have a local content of about 50 per
cent for the first four or five months, the Getz would
have a local content of 85 per cent at the time of its
launch.
The
Getz may be available only with a 1.3 litre engine to
begin with.

Maruti launches Versa variant
New Delhi: Car market leader Maruti Udyog Ltd has
announced the launch of a new variant of the MUV priced
at Rs 3.27 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new variant is
a five-seater, and comes with a heater and with the provision
to fit an air-conditioner.
According
to a release, the new variant will help Maruti retain
its large base of Omni customers by providing an excellent
upgrade option for them.

GM's Tavera positioned against Scorpio
and Qualis
New Delhi: General Motors India's new multi-utility
vehicle (MUV) the Chevrolet Tavera, to be launched in
the second quarter of 2004, will have 92 per cent local
content and is expected to be priced at less than Rs 6
lakh.
The
new Chevrolet MUV will be powered by diesel engine technology
from Isuzu, and would offer 20 per cent more fuel efficiency
than some of the other players in the segment, according
to a company statement. The engine is being developed
at Hindustan Motor's Pithampur plant.

VSNL makes space on FLAG bandwidth
for Reliance
Mumbai: Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) and Reliance-group
owned FLAG Telecom have agreed on connectivity for four
STM-1 circuits to Reliance Infocomm on its bandwidth,
as against the company's requirement for 15.
While
the Reliance group owns the FLAG network its landing station
in India is owned by VSNL.
In
an ongoing tussle between the two concerns for additional
circuits, VSNL has said that it cannot provide 15 STM-1s
to Reliance Infocomm because there were other parties
who had to be catered to as well.

Kyocera sets up test facility at
Bangalore
Bangalore: Kyocera Wireless Corp (KWC), a CDMA
wireless handset manufacturer, has set up a product testing
laboratory at its Bangalore centre. According to a company
release the facility will help to speed up product release
cycles of Kyocera phones.
The facility will be the first such to be set up by the
company outside its US headquarters in San Diego.

Cognizant helping companies save
costs
Chennai: Cognizant Technology Solutions has released
a study which shows that its customers in insurance, financial
services, healthcare and media have reduced their information
technology maintenance costs by a 30 per cent to 40 per
cent, after using the `portfolio analysis service' of
the company and leveraging Cognizant's offshore capabilities.
According
to a company release from Cognizant clients saved an average
of 12 per cent even before moving applications management
offshore by using Cognizant's portfolio analysis service
to develop and implement a strategy for streamlining their
systems.
Cognizant
is a provider of IT services.

CommScope's Indian subsidiary
begins operations
Bangalore: The US-based CommScope announced the
start of the Indian operations of Systimax Solutions,
its wholly owned subsidiary, in India.
The
company says that the Indian operations will enable it
to position itself as an end-to-end connectivity solutions
provider in India.
CommScope
is a manufacturer and supplier of broadband coaxial cable
and supplier of fibre-optic and twisted pair cables.
Systimax Solutions will provide integrated end-to-end
connectivity solutions for voice, data, video and building
management applications in enterprise networks.

Alcatel and ITI sign up for DSL
deployment
Bangalore: Alcatel and ITI have announced the signing
of a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing
long-term cooperation for digital subscriber line (DSL)
deployment in the Indian market.
The
companies say that Alcatel's DSL technology along with
its expertise in planning, engineering and optimisation,
combined with ITI's expertise in value-added services
would enable the successful rollout of broadband services
in India.

says that it plans to offer value-added services to the
