Orchid Chemicals gets European nod for bulk drug
Chennai: Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals have announced that its manufacturing facility for the bulk drug, Cefadroxil Monohydrate has been approved by the European drug authority. The approval will enable Orchid to export the drug to Europe.Thus far the European authority, European Directorate for Quality of Medicines, has approved seven of Orchid's drugs.

CESC to merge subsidiaries
Kolkata: Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC), has convened an EGM on April 21 to seek the approval of its shareholders for the proposed merger of two of its wholly-owned subsidiary companies with itself. CESC is the flagship company of the RPG group.

The EGM, which is to be held under the directive of the Calcutta High Court, will place before the shareholders the merger proposal involving Balagarh Power Company Ltd (BPCL) and CESCON. The company will also seek the shareholders' nod for mortgaging its movable properties in order to secure term loans and debentures.

Nicholas Piramal and IISc collaboration on drug research
Mumbai: Pharma major Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NPIL) will collaborate on research with the Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in order to develop drugs for fungal infections.
NPIL would have exclusive rights to commercialise any products coming out of this collaboration.

Adobe India to develop digital imaging products
Bangalore: Adobe Systems (India) Pvt Ltd., the Indian subsidiary of publishing software giant Adobe Systems, plans to take up development of digital imaging solutions for hand-held and mobile devices, and aims to be a primary owner of the digital imaging product in the mobile space.

The India team has complete ownership for the PageMaker and Framemaker products and handles all phases of the new feature releases, from conceptualising, designing, delivering to testing.
The company has so far invested Rs 45 crore in its Indian operations and hopes to end the year with close to 400 people. It currently has close to 280 people. Adobe India accounts for 18 per cent of the Adobe's global workforce, which is expected to increase to 25 per cent by the year-end.

Engineering Services and Solutions for Neilsoft
Pune: The Pune-based IT solutions company, Neilsoft, will pitch itself as an engineering design services providers and has already bagged contracts worth $3 million from the US and UK-based companies, including Black & Veatch, Handson Spancrete and Concast. The venture capital-backed company is in the engineering services and solutions space.According to the company the next wave of outsourcing to come to India will be in the engineering services space and it hopes to be correctly positioned to tap the demand.

The company intends to leverage its expertise and focus on industrial plant design, multi-level parking, schools and residential buildings for which, according to the company, there is demand abroad.The company has just announced the opening of its new engineering services centre and will add 120 engineers who will spearhead growth in the new focus areas. While only 16 per cent of the company's current revenues come from the construction area, the figure is expected to go up to over 40 per cent in the next two years.

Cerebra to develop project for UK company
Bangalore: Cerebra Integrated Technologies Ltd, a Bangalore-bred total-IT solutions company, has bagged a large project from a UK-based IT solutions company for the development of Web-based software solutions to facilitate easy communication for the hearing impaired. The project will be completed within six months. The application is meant for the speech/hearing impaired to communicate with either speech/hearing impaired or normal people.

Patni Computers initiative with BITS
Mumbai: As per a MoU, the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, will offer educational programmes to the employees of Patni Computer Systems Ltd through its`BITS Off-Campus Distance Learning & Collaborative Programmes'.Under the terms of the MoU, starting April, BITS will operate an off-campus centre at Patni, initially at its Mumbai and Pune facilities. Patni Computers will provide corporate and financial support, enabling selected employees to participate in the programme.

D'damas to roll out signature jewellery
New Delhi: Jewellery firm, D'damas, has roped in five Bollywood stars to help design jewellery under the name `IIFA Glitterati collection', with the different lines being named after the stars themselves. The stars are Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary, Celina Jaitley and Simran.

The company says that the signature of the star will be laser inscribed on each piece of jewellery and will be sold in 130 jewellery retail stores.The company is a joint venture between Gemplus Jewellery and Damas, which claims to be the largest retailing jewellery brand chain in the West Asia.

New Delhi: Samsung India is launching a microwave cooking festival, `Samsung Spice of Life — The Grand Recipe Hunt' starting in Delhi and Chandigarh.The Spice of Life contest encourages microwave oven users to share their successful recipes, with the prize-winning entries being featured in the `Samsung Book of Microwave Cooking'. The contest will roll out in Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai from April 5-12.

Mother Dairy ice-cream now in Punjab and UP
New Delhi: The National Dairy Development Board-owned Mother Dairy has launched its ice cream in select towns of Punjab and will follow it up with a launch in select towns of Uttar Pradesh on April 1. Mother Dairy is currently the market leader in Delhi, with a 71 per cent volume share.The company launched its ice-cream in Chandigarh, Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
