GDP up 10.4 per cent in 3rd quarter
New
Delhi: The country's gross domestic product (GDP)
registered a 10.4 per cent year-on-year growth during
the third quarter of 2003-04. This is over and above the
growth rates of 5.7 per cent and 8.4 per cent for the
first and second quarters, respectively.The cumulative
average growth for April-December 2003, thus, works out
to 8.2 per cent, compared with 4.1 per cent for the corresponding
three quarters of the previous year. The 10.4 per cent
GDP growth for the third quarter has, to a large extent,
been propelled by the farm sector, which has expanded
by 16.9 per cent. Industry has also performed well, recording
a growth of 6.5 per cent, over and above 6.8 per cent
for the third quarter of 2002-03.The services sector has
grown by 7.6 per cent, 9.8 per cent and nine per cent,
respectively during the first three quarters of 2003-04.

Fiscal deficit 4 per cent till Feb
'04
New
Delhi: Centre's fiscal deficit mounted to Rs 1,10,470
crore till February, despite higher growth in tax collections.
The deficit till February works out to 4.0 per cent of
GDP.According to figures released by the Controller General
of Accounts, the Centre's total expenditure stood at Rs
3,83,796 crore, while total receipts were at Rs 2,73,326
crore.

Japan extends Rs 5102 crore through
ODA
New Delhi: Japan has extended assistance to India
amounting to Rs 5,102 crore for implementation of eight
projects including the Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System
(DMRTS) Project.This
marks a significant 12.4 per cent increase over the previous
year's aggregate of the soft loan financial assistance
extended by Japanese government through the Japan Bank
for International Cooperation (JBIC).JBIC
is the Japanese Government's financial institution extending
ODA (Overseas Development Assistance) through loans to
the developing countries.The
JBIC funding will be at a concessional rate of interest
of 1.3 per cent with a repayment period of 30 years and
a grace period of 10 years.

Taskforce on traditional medicines
New Delhi: A taskforce comprising senior representatives
from the Government, the Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), VHERDS (the Voluntary
Health, Education and Rural Development Society), industry
and the scientific community has been constituted, in
order to identify, evaluate, standardise and improve the
quality of traditional medicines.
There is a considerable potential for strengthening traditional
systems of medicine for improving the quality of healthcare,
contribution to rural development and poverty alleviation,
domestic production and exports.

Tohra passes away
New Delhi: Senior Akali Dal and Shiromani Gurudwara
Prabandhak Committee chief Gurucharan Singh Tohra died
at the Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi late tonight.
He was 79.Born at Tohra village of Patiala district in
Punjab in September 1924, he was a graduate in Punjabi
from Lahore University. Tohra became the acting president
of SGPC, which manages key Sikh shrines, in 1972.Tohra
continued to head the SGPC, for a record 27 years before
he was unceremoniously removed from the key post following
a split in SAD in the wake of his revolt against Badal's
leadership.Tohra
was a member of the Lok Sabha in 1977-79 and also member
of the Rajya Sabha at various periods.
