files and Sonia to follow today
Rae Bareli: Congress President
Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination papers for the Rae
Bareli Lok Sabha constituency today. Her mother-in-law
Indira Gandhi and father-in-law Feroze Gandhi had earlier
represented the constituency. Her son Rahul Gandhi has
filed his nomination from the adjoining constituency of
Amethi.
Fernandes files from Muzaffarpur
Muzaffarpur: Defence Minister and NDA convenor George
Fernandes has filed his nomination papers for the Lok
Sabha polls from Muzaffarpur in north Bihar. Fernandes,
president of Samata Party, had emerged victorious from
the seat four times in 1977, 1980, 1989 and 1991 prior
to shifting to Nalanda, which he has represented three
times in a row in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
Govinda files from Mumbai North
Mumbai: Filmstar Govinda filed his nomination
papers as a Congress candidate from the North Mumbai constituency
in Maharashtra. Union Minister for Petroleum, Ram Naik
of the BJP is the serving MP from the constituency. The
actor had joined the Congress last month.
Manohar Joshi, Jayawantiben Mehta, Kirit Somaiyya,
Gurudas Kamath file from Mumbai
Mumbai: Former Union Minister Jayawantiben Mehta,
Kirit Somaiyya from the BJP and Gurudas Kamath from the
Congress officially entered the election arena. Lok Sabha
speaker Manohar Joshi, is the Shiv Sena candidate from
Mumbai North Central.

S&P
concerned over fiscal deficit
New Delhi: Standard and Poor's (S&P), the credit
rating company has expressed concern over the finances
of the Centre and State Governments. The agency's Managing
Director, Paul A. Coughlin emphasised that the key to
sustain the current growth momentum was "fiscal consolidation".
The combined fiscal deficit of the Centre and States currently
exceeds 10 per cent of the country's GDP.

Jaswant:
10.4 per cent growth is sustainable
Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Finance Minister,
Mr Jaswant Singh, has said that the 10.4 per cent growth
in the third quarter was "sustainable," and
that the projected growth of more than eight per cent
for 2003-04 would be achieved. He also said that the growth
figures were not a "figment of my imagination. They
have been arrived at by the Central Statistical Organisation."
