US economy: Jobs are Marching in
Washington: The US economy has added 3,08,000 jobs
in March - close to three times the forecast. The second
half of 2003 saw GDP increase by 6 per cent (annualised).
Economists are saying that productivity was reaching saturation
levels and so companies and businesses would have no choice
but to hire, in order to meet rising demand. This seems
to have been borne out by the employment figures for March.

Microsoft
readies Office 2004 for Macs
Redmond,
USA: Microsoft has announced that the latest version
of its Office 2004 for Apple computers will be in stores
by the third week of May. The new software will cost the
same as the previous version.

Bank
of America downsizes seven per cent
Charlotte,
USA: Bank of America Corporation has said it will
eliminate 12,500 jobs over the next two years. The downsizing
will come through attrition, layoffs and vacancies that
will be allowed to lapse. The
cuts will begin this month, as the company begins notifying
affected employees and will be implemented throughout
the corporation.
Bank
of America has merged with the Fleet Boston Financial
Corporation to create the third biggest bank in the United
States with an estimated assets base of $ 966 billion.
