Hyderabad is sixth hub for Blue Dart
Hyderabad: Blue Dart Express Ltd has made Hyderabad its sixth aviation hub after New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. The Hyderabad hub becomes operational from May 17. The company has recorded a PAT (profit after tax) of Rs 26.48 crore on a turnover of Rs 355.33 crore for the year ended March 31, 2004.

Wockhardt to begin trials on new anti-infective
Mumbai: Woxckhrdt, the Mumbai-based pharma company, has informed the BSE that it had received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct Phase I clinical trials on its new Chemical entity, WCK 1152, an antibacterial compound for treating respiratory infection According to Wockhardt, the company was the first Indian to file an Investigational New Drug for an anti-infective in 2001. The global anti-infective market is valued at over $35 billion.

BEML into JV with Tatra
Mumbai: Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) plans to invest Rs 300 crore in a joint venture with Czech truck maker, Tatra AS to set up a manufacturing plant to produce off-road trucks. The JV will be a 51 per cent BEML and 49 per cent Tatra company.

This company will largely cater to the Indian defence forces by manufacturing 200-300 off-road vehicles every year. Tatra has been a supplier of super heavy trucks to the Indian Army through BEML for over 25 years. The company also has plans to set up assembly and manufacturing units in Sri Lanka, Ghana, China and South Africa for the production of defence, construction equipment and railway coaches. Additionally, talks are also on in other countries such as Surinam and Iran.

The billion dollar club: Murugappas join up
Chennai: The Chennai-based Murugappa group has said that its turnover has crossed the $1-billion mark in 2003-04. The turnover was about Rs 5,200 crore ($1.17 billion), a 25 per cent growth over the previous year's figure of about Rs 4,200 crore. The Murugappa group's companies include EID Parry (India) Ltd, Carborundum Universal Ltd, Parry Agro Industries Ltd, Tube Investments of India Ltd and Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co Ltd. The group planned to expand in areas such as fertiliser and sugar. It would increase its sugarcane crushing capacity to 20,000 tonnes per day at four locations, from about 15,000 tonnes now. It would also set up a sugar refinery of 30,000 tonnes capacity to manufacture refined sugar.

GM to introduce new Chevrolet models
Bangalore: General Motors India has registered a 74 per cent growth in sales of its cars in April 2004 compared with the figures in the same month last year. The company says it is planning to bring in more new and exciting Chevrolet products specifically designed for the Indian market. The company sold a total of 1,401 cars in April 2004 compared with 805 in April 2003 registering a growth of 74.04 per cent. Chevrolet Optra, the luxury sedan, sold 607 cars, while Corsa sales went up to 774 cars. Since its India launch late last year, nearly 8,000 Chevrolet Optra cars have been sold so far.

R-World to provide exam results
New Delhi: RELIANCE Infocomm plans to host the results of board and competitive exams and on its mobile phone portal, R-World. The service is expected to benefit students across the country who have appeared for the CBSE or ICSE board exams or various competitive tests like AIIMS, CET or CMT. The company has also tied up with nearly 50 State-level boards to post their results.

The service was launched last year with CBSE, ICSE and Uttar Pradesh Board results. To access the results, users had to access R-World through Reliance mobile phones and feed the roll number to view the result. The detailed result can be forwarded to other users and more than one result can be obtained in one go by feeding multiple roll numbers.

Tata Elxsi net profits jump 50 per cent
Bangalore: Tata Elxsi has registered a net profit of Rs 17.54 crore on sales revenue of Rs 153.48 crore for the year ended March 31, 2004 against a net profit of Rs 11.68 crore on revenue of Rs 109.6 crore in the previous year. The board of director of Tata Elxsi has decided to pay a dividend of Rs 4 per share (40 per cent on face value of Rs 10 per share), said a company press release.

Tata Elxsi's software development and services segment recorded revenues of Rs 94.11 crore during fiscal 2003-04 compared to Rs. 77.57 crore last year, while its System Integration division, which caters to the domestic market, contributed Rs. 60.13 crore during the year compared to Rs. 33.12 crore the previous year.

Jataayu looks at the African market
Bangalore: Jataayu Software, a provider of telecom solutions in areas WAP (wireless application protocol), MMS (multimedia messaging services) and SMS (short messaging service) plans to enter the African wireless market. With its participation at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Cairo 2004, Jataayu is all set to offer to the African carriers its range of solutions which have enabled leading carriers in the Asian market to lower their total cost of ownership and increase average revenue per user, said a company press release.

HLL launches oil-control gel
Mumbai: Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) has introduced a new oil-control fairness gel under its Fair & Lovely brand. Containing extracts of real papaya and watermelon, the gel is pegged on par with the rest of the Fair & Lovely creams, at Rs 26.50 for 25gm and Rs 48 for 50 gm. Launched almost three decades ago, apart from the original fairness cream, Fair & Lovely's present portfolio comprises variants such as anti-marks, ayurvedic and darker skin.
