Manmohan will be next PM
New Delhi: Dr. Manmohan Singh is all set to take
over as the country's Prime Minister after being invited
by the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to form a government
at the Centre. This follows Dr Singh's formal election
as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP).
Sonia Gandhi would, however, continue to be the Congress
President and Chairperson of the CPP - a new post created
by the Congress to meet the demands of the political situation.
Dr
Singh, who was Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (September
1982 to January 1985) and Deputy Chairman of the Planning
Commission (January 1985 to July 1987), became the country's
Finance Minister on June 21, 1991. During his tenure till
May 15, 1996, he presented five full Union Budgets and
more importantly, steered the country through a severe
balance of payments crisis that triggered a process of
reforms, which have subsequently proved irreversible.
Dr Singh will be the fourth member from the Upper House
to occupy the high office after Indira Gandhi, H.D. Deve
Gowda and I.K. Gujral.
DMK: We're in
New Delhi: DMK has decided to participate in the
Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government on
the request of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who called
on DMK Chief M Karunanidhi this morning.
SP:
We're not
New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party has expressed its
reluctance to join the government. SP leader Amar Singh
said that the contradiction that the Left parties faced
in joining the government applied equally to his party
which fought against the Congress in UP and some other
states.
Rahul Gandhi: I will not
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has asserted that he will
certainly not be in the government. He said that he was
needed in the party and that there would be many people
better than him who will be in the Cabinet.
Mulayam:
I have not
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh
Yadav has denied reports that he had decided to resign
from the membership of the Lok Sabha and would prefer
to continue as the Chief Minister of the state. He said
any decision regarding his continuance as member of Lok
Sabha or state Legislative Assembly would be taken by
the party.
His
denial has come in the wake of Party General Secretary
Amar Singh's reported remarks to newspersons in New Delhi
that Yadav has chosen the post of Chief Minister over
Membership of Parliament and would resign from the Lok
Sabha.

Tata
Power buys from MSEB to restore supply
Mumbai: Several parts of Mumbai experienced a major
power failure and suburban train services were disrupted
last night after Tata Power's Trombay generation unit
tripped. Train services were disrupted along the Central
and Western lines leaving many commuters stranded. Power
supply was restored in many areas by 10.30 p.m. as Tata
Power purchased around 400 MW power from the Maharashtra
State Electricity Board.
Tata Power's 1,300 MW Trombay unit, the main power supplier
to Mumbai, tripped last night at 9.16 p.m. on Tuesday,
reportedly after a lightning struck an insulator. This
led to a blackout in South Mumbai and eastern suburbs.
Suburbs where other service providers - Reliance Energy
and BEST - supply power, including Chembur and Bandra,
also suffered blackouts as both these companies buy power
from TPC. TPC is still assessing the exact reason for
the failure.
