India and Nepal sign railway service agreement
Kathmandu:
India and Nepal have signed a railway service agreement
which will reduce transit and transportation costs and
enhance the landlocked country's competitive strength
in the global market.
The
agreement will pave the way for the operation of the Inland
Clearance Depot (ICD) built in Birgunj in central Terai.
Linked with the Indian railway network, the ICD will also
help reduce the transit and transportation costs for exports
and imports. The construction of ICD had been completed
in 2000. But in the absence of a railway service agreement
with India it could not be operationalised. The ICDis
expected to be fully operationalised by mid-July.
