Morepen Labs gets patent for cholesterol drug
New Delhi: Morepen Labs has received approval for the international patent of a new crystalline form (VI) of Atorvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug. Atorvastatin is the largest selling drug in the world, with a market size of $10 billion.

This is the second international patent for Atorvastatin and Morepen received the world patent for the amorphous form last year. The company is also filing abbreviated new drug applications (ANDA) for both these molecules and expects them to fetch a business of approximately $250 million in the next 10 years.

BS Refrigerators to shut down plant
Bangalore: BPL has decided to shut down its refrigerator plant with the group company, BS Refrigerators Ltd, applying for closure of the factory under the provision of Industrial Disputes Act.

The company has cited working capital constraints as the reason behind the move to close the plant located at Whitefield in the outskirts of Bangalore. Sanction for the closure has to be accorded by the Labour Department, Government of Karnakata and the same is awaited, the company said in a statement to BSE.

Bharti and Nokia in network management tie-up
Mumbai: Bharti Tele-Ventures and Nokia have announced a $275-million 'MEGA Networks' initiative to build and manage networks that would boost the quality of service offered by the leading Indian cellular service provider. As part of the initiative and a three-year service contract, Nokia would provide quality assurance to AirTel networks in Mumbai, Maharashtra (including Goa) and Gujarat and the two new circles of Bihar (including Jharkhand) and Orissa.

The initiative is expected to result in providing congestion-free networks with seamless coverage and enhanced quality in over 550 towns and cities across the five circles. Nokia will also deploy its network optimisation tools such as Nokia NetAct, a multi-vendor and multi-technology operations support system on a single platform. In addition, Nokia would also provide spare part management service for multi-vendor hardware. The agreement is on the basis of 'capacity on demand' and 'pay as you grow'. The agreement also provisions for taking over of close to 100 Bharti employees by Nokia.

Kale Consultants face dip in revenues
Mumbai: The Pune-based Kale Consultants Ltd has posted a 5.1 per cent dip in revenues for the year ended March 31, 2004.
The total revenues have dipped to Rs 48.1 crore for the 2003-04 fiscal compared to Rs 50.7 crore the previous year. The company has reported a net profit of Rs 3.16 crore against Rs 3.14 crore last year. On future outlook, the company said that it would focus on consolidating its position in the travel and aviation sector while "actively looking at other areas to cross-sell its products".

HP's server technology innovation raises work capacity
Bangalore: Hewlett Packard has claimed that it has achieved a breakthrough innovation in its standards-based server portfolio by including new features in system design to increase the workload capacity and cut costs for HP Integrity server customers.
This new design has been achieved with a new dual processor module called mx2. This processor module features two industry-standard Intel Itanium 2 processors on a single module that can plug into existing systems, delivering up to 35 per cent lower acquisition costs than similar IBM systems.

Infinera plans advanced telecom lab
Bangalore: Infinera, a provider of telecommunications systems based on breakthrough photonic integration technology, has announced its expansion plans in India to include software development and an advanced telecom lab. Infinera currently has a product development centre in Bangalore, which performs a strategically critical role in overall product development.

The company's headcount is expected to reach 90 engineers by the year-end. Infinera recently announced two key technology breakthroughs: the first large-scale Photonic Integrated Circuits, and the first Digital Optical Networking System, the Infinera DTN. The Indian team contributed significantly towards the development of breakthrough technology.

Color Chips to have subsidiary in Philippines
Hyderabad: Color Chips has informed the BSE that its board of directors has resolved to open a wholly owned subsidiary in Philippines. This subsidiary is being established to locate an overseas production centre to augment its current development and production capacity for entertainment software. The board also resolved to make a formal application to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in this regard. During the last four quarters, the company has bagged several overseas contracts.

Intoto D-Link in security solutions linkup
Hyderabad: Intoto Inc., a provider of security software, has announced a partnership with D-Link India to offer its intrusion prevention products based on Intoto's IntruPro solution to the enterprise segment. As a result of the collaboration, D-Link India will offer IPS security appliances optimised for India and suitable for both SME (small and medium enterprise) and enterprise customers. Intoto demonstrated the IntruPro IPS solution integrated in a D-Link India designed hardware platform last week at the Networld+Interop show in Las Vegas, according to a company release.

Gillette unveils power toothbrush
Chennai: Gillette India Ltd launched a battery-powered toothbrush, Cross Action Power, in the marketson Tuesday.
The toothbrush market in India is estimated at Rs 500 crore, of which one per cent is under the power brush category. According to the company, in developed countries power brushes account for about 35 per cent.
