Microsoft to appeal against EU ruling
Brussels:
Microsoft plans to appeal to a European court to suspend
parts of the European Commission's landmark decision that
ordered it to stop business practices that violate antitrust
law. Microsoft will also ask the Court of First Instance
to suspend the decision that Microsoft should Media Player
software from its Windows operating system and share information
so that rival computer manufacturers of servers can more
easily compete.
The
Commission issued a sweeping 302-page ruling against Microsoft
on March 24, finding the company abused its dominance,
and ordered that it change its business practices and
pay a ?497 million ($606.4 million) fine. The commission
gave Microsoft 90 days to separate its Windows Media Player,
which plays music and videos over the Internet, from its
Windows operating system.

Green
to raise bid amount for M&S by £1 bn
London:
Philip Green, the retailing tycoon, raising his bid
for Marks & Spencer by at least £1 billion ($1.84
billion). M&S is believed to have rejected Green's
multi-billion-pound takeover proposal. A renewed attempt
by Green to get his hands on Marks & Spencer, the
UK 's top clothing retailer and biggest high street name,
could result in a bid worth up to £10 billion, or
425 pence per share. The investors said the earlier deal
was worth as little as 330p, and significantly undervalued
the group. Marks & Spencer's new chief executive Stuart
Rose, a turnaround expert credited with turning around
the British retailer, is expecting a higher bid from Green,
according to reports in the UK media.
