Montek likely to assume charge on July 1
New
Delhi: Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman-designate
of Planning Commission, has resigned as a Director from
the International Monetary Fund and is likely to assume
charge from July 1. Ahulwalia was appointed the Deputy
Chairman of the Commission on June 16. The Planning Commission
Deputy Chairman enjoys Cabinet rank and is normally a
special invitee to the Cabinet meeting.
Commenting on the eight per cent economic growth achieved
last year, Ahluwalia said "the economic growth of
8 per cent was only for the last year while in the years
preceding that, it hovered around four to five per cent
and the average for the last five years must be less than
six per cent." Asked whether 8 per cent economic
growth was achievable, he said the range between 7 to
8 per cent as outlined in the CMP is the "correct
range" and can be achieved.
