Cabinet
clears India-Nepal rail agreement
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has given its post-facto
approval to the signing of the India-Nepal Rail Services
Agreement for introduction of Freight Train Services between
the two countries to and from Birgunj in Nepal via Raxaul
in India. At
present, freight traffic to and from Nepal is moving by
road from different ports of India. It is proposed to
improve the services by moving this traffic on the railway
system from the Kolkata/Haldia ports to the newly-created
terminal at Birgunj which is linked to Raxaul station
of East Central Railway. In
addition, some bilateral traffic also originating from
loading stations on Indian Railways will be destined for
Birgunj. This will reduce transit time and provide better
customer services and also prevent diversion of Nepal-bound
transit traffic to the Indian market thereby curbing smuggling.
