President rejects Dhananjoy's mercy petition
New Delhi: The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has rejected the mercy petition of the death row convict, Dhananjoy Chatterjee.

He was given the death sentence for raping and murdering a 14-year-old schoolgirl in 1990.

The decision was conveyed to the Union Home Ministry yesterday and it would be officially communicated to the West Bengal Government, official sources said.

More gas for Reliance off the east coast
Mumbai: Reliance Industries has made two gas discoveries — one of them major — in exploration blocks off the east coast of India.

Niko Resources, Reliance's 10 per cent partner in both the D-6, made the announcement of these discoveries on Tuesday.

Reliance's first major discovery was one of 14 trillion cubic feet of gas in the Krishna-Godavari basin in October 2002.

Among the new finds, the exploration discovery well, M-1, is the 11th successful well drilled in the 1.9-million-acre D-6 block, said the statement from Niko.

This is the fourth consecutive exploration gas discovery in NEC-25, said the statement. With respect to the NEC-25 block, plans are progressing for fast track gas production, said the Niko announcement.

Maersk's terminal proposal amongst 46 cleared
New Delhi: The proposal of Denmark-based Maersk A/S for setting up a joint venture company for the redevelopment of a bulk terminal and turn it into a container terminal involving foreign direct investment (FDI) worth Rs.317.80 crore was among the FDI proposals cleared by the Government on Wednesday.

A total of 46 proposals involving FDI worth Rs.408.22 crore was approved by the Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, here.
