India and Pakistan conclude talks on Siachen
New Delhi: India and Pakistan have agreed to continue their discussions for resolving the Siachen glacier issue in a peaceful manner. In a statement issued at the end of the talks, the Ministry of External Affairs said both sides had reviewed the ceasefire in place in the Siachen area and would continue the process of talks on any potential redeployment of troops on the Actual Ground Position Line.

The two sides are trying to move forward from the ceasefire agreed to on the world's highest battlefield last year. The talks on the glacier will be followed by Indo-Pak parleys on the other contentious issue of Sir Creek in the Rann of Kutch.

Inflation up at 7.51 per cent
New Delhi: The Chief Economic Advisor, Dr Ashok Lahiri, has managed to get some egg on his face with his "worst is behind us" observation just a day earlier. Inflation has now jumped to a three year high of 7.51 per cent. According to the latest wholesale price index (WPI) data released by the Government here today, the year-on-year inflation rate surged by almost a full percentage point, from 6.52 per cent for the week ended July 17 to 7.51 per cent for the latest recorded week ending July 24. The latest inflation number does not take into account the increase in prices of diesel and petrol effected by the public sector oil companies on July 31. This is expected to push up the inflation rate further, when the Government comes out with the WPI data for the week ending July 31.
