Dream Desk PC: Internet safety tools for kids
Salt
Lake City, USA: Content
Watch Inc. has announced that The Walt Disney Co. will
use three Content Watch Internet protection tools in the
newly introduced Disney Dream Desk PC. The Disney Dream
Desk PC was designed by Disney and frog design. Built
by Medion AG, the PC features a 14.1-inch Mickey-shaped
TFT LCD flat panel monitor with embedded speakers, a DVD
player, a CD writer and player, and an ergonomically designed
kid-sized mouse. The PC is also equipped with a multimedia
keyboard with digital pen for added fun.
For Internet protection the Content Protect Home Suite
(consisting of three Content Watch applications) is pre-installed
onto each Disney Dream Desk PC. The Content Protect (Internet
filtering), Email Protect (e-mail filtering and spam blocking)
and Popup Protect (pop-up window blocking) are the programmes
that are installed, with the highest settings on each
application already enabled on each PC.
Parents have direct access to the software from a special
key on the keyboard and they can make the software active
from the very first moment when they start up the Disney
Dream Desk. In addition to the three Content Watch applications,
each Disney Dream Desk PC features a variety of Disney
applications including Disney Pix, Disney Mix and Disney
Flix, which allow children to draw, edit pictures, create
music and write and direct their own movies. Exclusive
to the Disney Dream Desk PC, Disney's Flix, Mix and Pix
applications are designed to work together as a creative
suite. Some other applications include Disney's games:
Disney Majhongg, Disney's Extremely Goofy Skateboarding,
Disney's Adventures in Typing with Timon & Pumbaa,
and a 14-day free membership to Disney's Toon Town Online.
The
computer comes installed with top-quality components including
the Intel Celeron D Processor 330, the Microsoft XP Home
Edition operating system and Microsoft Works productivity
software. Three-dimensional graphics acceleration on the
PC is provided by ATI Technologies Inc. The Disney Dream
Desk PC is ideal for small spaces because the computer
fits right behind the LCD flat panel monitor and as an
added safety measure, the PC setup incorporates a unique
cable management system to hide bulky plugs from view
and small fingers. The computer will retail for $599 (MSRP)
with the monitor display sold separately at $299 (MSRP).
Additional Dream Desk PC peripherals, including the Disney

Pin
Point technology for enhanced security
Dulles, USA: Guardian Technologies International
Inc. has introduced its PinPoint threat identification
and detection alert system which according to the company
dramatically enhances the ability of existing baggage
and package scanning equipment to detect and identify
explosives, guns and other threat items. PinPoint, when
integrated into existing baggage and package scanning
equipment, immediately highlights and identifies concealed
threat items that trained screeners find very difficult
or impossible to detect without physical searches.
PinPoint
combines software with artificial intelligence, acting
as a "second set of eyes," to identify threat
items, such as heavy metal objects and bombs/C4 explosives,
with an accuracy rate of up to 90 per cent, more than
twice the rate of existing scanning systems. PinPoint
also offers an unrivaled minimal "false positive"
rate of less than 10 per cent, compared to 30-60 per cent
for traditional scanning as reported in a 2003 GAO study.
PinPoint's improved threat detection capabilities greatly
reduce the possibility that a threat item or threat item
components will pass through a security check point undetected,
at the same time reducing the number of bags or packages
needlessly searched due to false positive readings. The
potential net result is enhanced safety, shorter security
lines, reduced security staffing costs and greater passenger
privacy.
When
PinPoint detects a threat item, it alerts screeners to
the presence of the specific type of item, avoiding a
physical inspection of the bag that could possibly cause
detonation, and enabling security staff to determine the
appropriate response based on the type of threat item.
In addition to PinPoint's applications for airport security,
PinPoint's technology enhances the accuracy of package
scanners employed at office buildings, government facilities,
hospitals, entertainment venues and other high-security
areas.
Guardian Technologies is currently adapting PinPoint for
additional applications which include: Cargo scanning,
Body scanning, Satellite image enhancement and identification,
Medical imaging, Illegal drug detection and Money laundering
detection. Guardian Technologies International, based
in Dulles, Virginia, employs high-performance imaging
technologies and advanced analytics to create integrated
information management products and services. It primarily
focuses on the areas of healthcare radiology and transportation
security scanning.
