first Indian Chairman Prakash Tandon passes away
Mumbai: Prakash Lal Tandon, the first Indian Chairman
of Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL), passed away on Monday in
Pune after a prolonged illness. He was 93 and is survived
by two sons and a daughter.
Tandon was the first Indian to be appointed as a director
on the board of HLL on October 13, 1956. Thereafter, he
became the first Indian vice-chairman of the company in
1960 and led it between 1961 and 1968 as the chairman.
After an early retirement from the services of the company,
Tandon was associated with the State Trading Corporation,
Punjab National Bank and the NCAER in senior positions.
Tandon was a chartered accountant by profession from the
University of Manchester.
Remembering Tandon, the HLL Chairman, M.S. Banga, said,
"Prakash was a truly visionary leader
He, of
course, made a very significant contribution to HLL. Even
more, he will be remembered for his contribution to the
world of Indian management and thinking."
Former HLL chairman Dr Ashok Ganguly, said that he was
a legend in his time. "He established standards and
norms for corporate conduct, governance and social conduct
that have now become popular and fashionable around the
world."

Krishnamurthy appointed Chairman
of NMCC
New Delhi: The Government on Wednesday appointed
V. Krishnamurthy as Chairman of the National Manufacturing
Competitiveness Council (NMCC). He will hold the rank
and status of a Union Cabinet Minister, an official statement
said here.
NMCC, which is being envisaged as an apex body, will provide
inputs for policy ranking as well as suggest measures
for enhancing the competitiveness of industry. Included
in its role is identification of manufacturing sectors
which have potential for global competitiveness, their
problems and constraints; evolving sector-specific strategies
for enhancing the competitiveness of manufacturing sector;
recommending measures to create common infrastructure
and facilities such as testing, quality and design; providing
forum for dialogue between the public and private sectors
and labour.
