World Bank extends $68 million loan for IDS project
New Delhi: In a bid to improve health services infrastructure in India, the World Bank has decided to extend a $68 million loan for the Integrated Disease Surveillance project. Finance Ministry joint secretary Ranjit Banerji and World Bank country head Michael F Carter signed an agreement to this effect on Thursday.

The credit will help the government improve availability of data on high priority diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, a World Bank release said.

"The project supports India's vision for consolidating and integrating disease surveillance and prepare it to monitor emerging diseases," Carter said.

The project, which aims to expedite action and response to threats arising from these diseases, would be implemented over the next five years.

Outsourcing has had 'limited impact': Study
New York: Amidst the raging debate over off shoring in the US, a Congress study has found that outsourcing has had a "far limited impact" on US jobs and economic growth.

Outsourcing appears to be growing but the number of US technology-related jobs that have migrated to lower wage countries like India in recent years is still unclear, as also the economic impact of the growing phenomenon, according to a study released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigating agency of Congress.

At the same time, it said that that so far it has had "far limited impact" on US jobs and economic growth.

GAO conducted the study at the request of several members of Congress. It said that its work was hampered by limited government data on offshoring and even the lack of a commonly accepted definition of the term.
