Indirect tax collections up 9.5 percent in H1
New Delhi: Excise and customs duty collection of the Central Government surged by 9.5 per cent in the first six months of the current fiscal to Rs69,611 crore, against Rs63,576 crore achieved in the same period last year.

While excise mop-up for the period under review stood at Rs44,463 crore (Rs40,409 crore in April-September 2003), customs collections during stood at Rs25,148 crore (Rs23,167).

The customs duty collections target for 2004-05 has been set at Rs 54,250 crore.

Government to come out with a user-friendly companies bill
New Delhi: The Government has said that it was committed to making a user-friendly Bill by adopting a consultative approach.

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Company Affairs, Prem Chand Gupta, has said that at the end of 90 days period on October 31 for receiving suggestions from the industry, professionals and other stakeholders on the Concept Paper for a simplified companies law, the Ministry plans to refer it to a high-level committee, which is going to work on the Bill.

The proposed committee will comprise representatives from the industry, chambers of commerce, cost and works accountants, company secretaries, chartered accountants and lawyers. The Minister stressed that the head of the committee will not be a Government official.
