Maharashtra goes to polls today
Mumbai: Amid tight security, polling for 288 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra began this morning.

There are altogether 64,390 polling stations in Maharashtra of which 4,500 have been marked sensitive. Maharashtra has approximately 6.5 crore voters and 82,000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are going to be used today.

The Election Commission has released two telephone numbers where voters can call up, if their names are not on the voting list. (22630996, 22642560)

Industrial growth at 7.9 per cent in August
New Delhi: Led by strong recovery by the manufacturing sector, industrial output registered 7.9 per cent growth in August 2004, as against growth of 5.7 per cent in the same month last year.

The cumulative growth of industrial output during the first five months of 2004-05 also stood at 7.9 per cent, against a growth of 5.9 per cent recorded during the corresponding period last fiscal, according to quick estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) figures released today by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO).

The power sector bounced back with growth of 7.1 per cent against nominal growth of 1.2 per cent earlier.

The mining sector also recorded 4.7 per cent growth, against 1.3 per cent growth during last year.
