Ernst&Young's 'Entrepreneur of the Year' awards
New Delhi: Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Enterprises has been chosen as the `Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2004'.

Mittal will now represent India at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award ceremony to be held in Monte Carlo, Monaco in May 2005.

Winners were also selected for awards in several categories based on attributes such as entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, strategic direction, global impact, innovation, personal integrity and influence.

Rahul Bajaj bagged the `Lifetime Achievement Award' for providing strong leadership to Bajaj Auto to make it a world-class two-wheeler manufacturer.

The Start-up Entrepreneur of the Year award went to Ashish Dhawan, founder and Senior Managing Director of ChrysCapital, an equity firm.

Habil F. Khorakiwala of Wockhardt was named winner in the `Healthcare and Life Sciences' category.

In the `Information, Communication and Entertainment (ICE)' category, the award winner was Kalanidhi Maran of Sun TV, while the winner in the `Services' category was Dr Ramdas M. Pai of the Manipal Education & Medical group.

The `Manager Entrepreneur of the Year' award was bagged by the ONGC Chairman and Managing Director, Subir Raha, while the award in the `Manufacturing' category went to Narottam Sekhsaria of Gujarat Ambuja Cement.

V.P. Shetty takes over as CMD, Canara Bank
Bangalore: V.P. Shetty has assumed charge as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Canara Bank.

Shetty, who has been the Chairman and Managing Director of United Commercial Bank, started his career in Canara Bank and later joined Vijaya Bank in 1973. He worked in several capacities in the bank before becoming the General Manager. He later moved to UCO Bank as its Executive Director and later assumed the responsibility of CMD of UCO Bank in October 2000.

Shetty succeeds R.V. Shastri who retired on October 31. Shetty is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Indian Banking Association and on the boards of LIC and Agriculture Finance Corporation.

Purushothaman is President of FHRAI
Mumbai: The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India (FHRAI) has elected M.P. Purushothaman, Chairman and Managing Director of The Empee Hotels Ltd, as the President for 2004-05.

According to an official release, Purushothaman takes over from Vivek Nair, Managing Director, The Leela Kempinski, on Monday. Prior to this, Purushothaman was the Vice-President of the organisation elected from the southern region.

This will be Purushothaman's second stint as President of FHRAI, having held this position during 2000-01.
