Wipro's Vivek Paul makes
it to TIME/CNN's global list
Bangalore: The Vice-Chairman and CEO of Wipro Technologies,
Vivek Paul, has been named among the Global Business Influentials
for 2004 by TIME and CNN. TIME has acknowledged Paul's
contribution in transforming Wipro Technologies from a
$150-million software developer into a $1-billion force
in offshore outsourcing, handling IT and customer service
for companies.
In the TIME/CNN honouree list for 2004, Paul joins the
elite company of renowned global business leaders as Jeffery
Immelt, GE; Chuck Prince, Citigroup; and Jamie Dimon,
JPMorgan Chase, among others, said a Wipro press release.
The honourees of TIME/CNN are a new breed of business
leaders who have redefined the way business is done, with
innovative management strategies and a commitment to transparency,
clear accountability and even helping change society along
the way.

Biospectrum
awards for 2004 announced
Bangalore: Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Serum
Institute of India, Pune, has been chosen Person of the
Year and Dr Manju Sharma, former DBT Secretary, named
for Lifetime Achievement for the second annual Biospectrum
awards in biotechnology for the year 2004.
The DBT Secretary, Dr M.K. Bhan, in Bangalore, gave away
the awards. Dr Poonawalla gets the award for putting India
on the global vaccines scene and Dr Sharma for starting
the Department of Biotechnology and putting it on the
reforms path until her retirement in March 2004, a release
said.
In the other two categories, Dr K.K. Narayanan, MD of
agri-biotechnology company Metahelix Life Sciences, was
adjudged the biotech Entrepreneur of the Year; the diagnostic
kit JEV Chex to detect Japanese encephalitis virus, and
developed by Bangalore-based Xcyton Diagnostics, was named
the biotech product of the year.
The awardees were chosen from five biotechnology segments
- biopharmaceuticals, agri-biotechnology, bio-informatics,
bio-industrial and bio-service, the release said.
