Damodaran takes over as SEBI chief
New Delhi: Industrial Bank of India (IDBI), Chairman-cum-Managing Director, M Damodaran has been appointed as the Chairman of Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Damodaran takes over as SEBI chief from G N Bajpai who retires tomorrow.

Damodaran, was instrumental in turning around the beleaguered Unit Trust of India, which was split into two organizations after the 2001 muddle, into the country's biggest mutual fund. He was also asked to look after IDBI and recently took over its full-time chairman-cum-managing director after the bank was corporatised.

Damodaran takes over as SEBI chief at a time when the stock market has been booming but at the same time there are concerns over unregulated hedge funds brought in by foreign institutional investors who had pumped in an estimated nine billion dollars till December 2004.

The government is yet to choose a successor to Damodaran as IDBI chairman.
