United
Telecom resumes full services in Nepal
New Delhi: The United Telecom Ltd, a joint venture
company of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Videsh
Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), Telecommuncations Consultants
India Ltd (TCIL) and Nepal Venture Private Ltd, which
offers telecom services in Nepal, has been permitted to
resume services.
The company has restored connectivity to its 25,000 mobile
subscribers in the kingdom, which was shut down by the
King Gyanendra administration after he dismissed the democratically-elected
Government.
The move assumes significance in the light of the meeting
between the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and King
Gyanendra on the sidelines of the Asian-African Summit
in Jakarta.
However, a significant part of the company's operations
had already been restored over the last few months. International
long distance calls from the kingdom, for instance, had
been restored in February. Senior UTL executives had said
the shutdown was causing revenue loss to the company.
While VSNL and TCIL hold 26.6 per cent each in United
Telecom, MTNL has 26.8 per cent stake. The Nepalase company
has 20 per cent stake. The firm is administered by India's
Department of Telecommunications and has a 10-year extendable
licence to provide basic service using wireless technology.

Anil
Ambani's resignation from IPCL: BSE to pursue matters
Mumbai: Marking a new twist in the ongoing ownership
tussle between the Ambani brothers, the Bombay Stock Exchange
(BSE) has indicated that it does not appear to be satisfied
with the communications of IPCL over resignation of Anil
Ambani from the company's Board.
A
senior official of the BSE has said that the matter would
be pursued "appropriately". "On the face
of it there appears to be a dichotomy in what was conveyed
on January 20 and the communication of April 23,"
the official said.
IPCL,
headed by Mukesh Ambani, had communicated to the BSE on
January 20 that the Board of Directors at their meeting
on that day had considered Anil's resignation as Vice
Chairman and Director and unanimously requested him to
reconsider the same.
In
his January 3 letter, Anil had accused a co-director Anand
Jain of conspiring to divide the family and said it was
below his dignity to serve on the same Board as Jain.
Both
BSE and NSE had sought clarification from IPCL on Friday
after media reports that Anil's name had been deleted
from the list of Board of Directors from the company's
website.
