Paul Karr: new financial controller at Nortel
Toronto: Nortel Networks has appointed Paul Karr, the former Bristol-Myers Squibb and General Electric (GE) executive as its full-time controller.

Paul Karr replaces Karen Sledge, who held the job on an interim basis since February 7. The new controller has about 27 years of accounting and financial experience. He has served as financial controller of Bristol-Myers from November '03 to December '04, where he was responsible for guiding a second restatement process.

Karr has also worked at various divisions of GE from '94 to '03, and served as chief accounting officer at GE Capital Market Services with about 16 years with Deloitte & Touche.

Karr will receive a base salary of $375,000 and be eligible for an annual bonus of 60 per cent of that. He will also be eligible to participate in other Nortel employee benefit plans and its executive retention plan. Nortel said that it also intends to recommend that Karr gets a new hire grant of 1,75,000 stock options.

Nortel went through an accounting scandal last year that led to the firing of three of its top executives.
