New Delhi: B B Tandon has assumed charge as the country's new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). I&B Secretary Naveen Chawla has also taken charge as Election Commissioner.

Tandon, along with another Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, has recently been under attack from senior bureaucrat L V Saptarishi and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad who have alleged casteism and bias on the part of the two commissioners in the countermanding of Chhapra Lok Sabha polls last year.

In his short tenure of about a year, Tandon will be conducting assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala and Assam. He also said that he is keen on pushing through electoral reforms, one of which will be accurate rolls with photographs.

Chawla also took charge as the election commissioner to fill the vacancy created by Tandon's elevation.
