M.P. Birla award for Prof Radhakrishnan
Kolkata:
The M.P. Birla Memorial Award 2005, for excellence in fundamental research, was presented today to Prof Venkataraman Radhakrishnan (Prof Emeritus, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore).

Some of the distinguished awardees in the past have been Prof Jayant V. Narlikar, Prof K. Kasturirangan and Prof K.D. Abhyankar.

The award is given by the MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, Kolkata, once in two years for "exceptional achievement" in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and allied disciplines, and comprises, among other things, a cheque for Rs1 lakh.

The citation read out at the presentation ceremony acclaimed Prof Radhakrishnan as a pioneer in many branches of astronomy. Associated with the world's biggest radio telescopes, he is the founding father of Radio Astronomy in India, and has also designed and fabricated ultralight aircraft and sail-boats.
