Kiran
Mazumdar Shaw conferred ICC Lifetime Achievement Award
Kolkata: The chairman & managing director of
Biocon Limited, Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, has been conferred
the Indian Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award
for her outstanding contributions in the field of biotechnology,
business and industry.
At
a ceremony on Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency hotel
in Kolkata, West Bengal information technology and environment
minister, Manabendra Mukherjee, handed over the prestigious
award.
According
to the award citation, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw's pioneering
efforts in biotechnology have drawn global recognition
both for Indian industry and Biocon. Her unique vision
has steered Biocon's transition from an industrial enzymes
company to an integrated biopharmaceutical company with
strategic research initiatives.
As
chairperson and mission leader of the National Task Force
on Biotechnology she has led several delegations abroad.
She serves on the Advisory Council of the government's
Department of Biotechnology where she has been instrumental
in bringing government, industry and academia together,
to chart a clear and progressive growth path for biotechnology
in India. Mostly recently, Shaw has been invited to join
the Prime Minister's council on Trade & Industry.
Shaw
is also the recipient of several prestigious awards including
the Padma Shri in 1989 for her pioneering efforts in Industrial
Biotechnology.
A
successful technocrat of global standing, Shaw is highly
respected in the corporate world. She is a much sought
after biotech pioneer who has been referred to as 'India's
Biotech Queen' by The Economist and 'India's mother of
invention' by New York Times.
The
'ICC Lifetime Achievement Award' was instituted by ICC
Calcutta Foundation, Indian Chamber of Commerce, in 1995
to honour distinguished men and women who had excelled
in their fields and were acknowledged as global leaders
in their disciplines.
The
first award was conferred on sitar maestro Pandit Ravi
Shankar, the second to Nobel laureate Dr Amartya Sen and
the third to Prof Jagdish Bhagwati for his contributions
in the field of international economic trade.
