Thyagarajan
joins TCS board as independent director
Mumbai:
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd has appointed Venkatraman
Thyagarajan as an independent director on its board.
Thyagarajan
is the vice-chairman of GlaxoSmithKline India and is responsible
for the global drug giant's operations in Asia Pacific.
The
Tata Consultancy Services board will now comprise five
members - chairman Ratan Tata, chief executive officer
and managing director S. Ramadorai and three independent
directors, Aman Mehta, Naresh Chandra and Thyagarajan.
Ramadorai
said, "As TCS ramps up its operations across the
globe, the guidance and expertise of Thyagarajan, who
has guided the business strategy of one of the largest
pharmaceutical companies in the region, will be invaluable."
The
software titan is planning to spend Rs950 crore on capacity
expansion - Rs350 crore on technology and Rs600 crore
on building infrastructure to house over 13,500 employees
it plans to recruit this year. Out of this number, at
least 2,000 will be from other countries.
"Thyagarajan
is a veteran in GlaxoSmithKline. He has served as vice-president
of south Asia since 2001. He has also served on the board
of Glaxo India since 1992 and began his tenure as managing
director in 1994," he added.
Thyagarajan
began his career as a management trainee for Glaxo India
in September 1970. He has worked as marketing consultant
for Europe, area marketing director for West Asia, Africa,
and eastern Europe as well as the area director for Southeast
Asia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
