Gateway Award 2005 for ITC chairman Y.C. Deveshwar
Beijing: ITC, one of India's foremost private sector
companies, is looking at business opportunities in China,
but the main focus will be on further developing the domestic
market, its Chairman Y C Deveshwar said, after receiving
the prestigious Development Gateway Award 2005 as well
as a rize money of US00,000 for the e-Choupal initiative.
"We have been looking at China but at the moment
we got our hands full. India's own priorities are so huge
that we need to create economic activity in our own country,"
Deveshwar said.
"ITC's
philosophy is to invest as much of its funds in generating
economic activity in India rather than look for opportunities
for ITC's capital in creating economic activity somewhere
else," he said "Charity begins at home and we
want to do that first," Deveshwar, also the President
of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said.
Deveshwar
pointed out that ITC was currently running a campaign
"let's put India first."
