Mumbai: In a move that is being perceived as providing a fillip to the Tata Group's telecom business, Ratan Tata has taken over as chairman of Tata Teleservices (TTSL) with Firdose Vandrewala stepping down from the post of chairman.

While TTSL is a private company, TTSL (Maharashtra) is a listed entity that was acquired by the Tatas. Overall the Tata group has invested about Rs15,000 crore in the telecom business, so far.

Vandrewala had earlier stepped down from the post of managing director of Tata Power.

TTSL's network spans 1,000 cities, and the company's subscriber base stands at 5.7mn as of September end.
