IBM
chief Palmisano meets PM
New
Delhi: Samuel J Palmisano, chairman and CEO of IBM,
the world's largest IT company and India's biggest MNC
software exporter, on Monday met with Prime Minister,
Manmohan Singh in order to discuss his company's India
plans. He also held a video-conference with and IT and
communications minister, Dayanidhi Maran from New Delhi.
Palmisano
was on a four-day visit to India. He assured the government
of IBM's full support on open source standards and e-governance.
Officials of department of information technology and
IBM will work together to set the modalities for open
source support systems.
During
his stay, he also visited the recently launched Global
Service Delivery Centre (GSDC) of the company at Bangalore,
which provides both local and global clients with command
center services, data center services and IT help desk
services.
IBM
has been in India since 1992 and has approximately 23,000
employees, making it India's sixth largest IT employer.
India is an important part of IBM's globally integrated
company model and also a centre of excellence in a number
of areas including business process outsourcing, delivery
services, research and software development.
IBM's
revenues from China, India, Brazil and Russia in 2004
grew more than 25% to US$4bn. In India, the growth was
45% year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2005, IBM recorded
a growth of 18% in Brazil, Russia, India, China. In the
second quarter, growth increased to 23%.
