Arvind Sharma is new IDRBT director
Hyderabad: Arvind Sharma has been appointed as the new Director of the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) with effect from November 10. His appointment is for a period of five years.

Before this Sharma was executive vice-president at Larsen & Toubro Infotech, Mumbai, where he headed the enterprise applications solutions business and coordinated the telecom, commercial and defence industry verticals.

RBI gets new executive directors
Mumbai: The RBI has appointed Anand Sinha and V S Das as executive directors of the bank with effect from November 11, 2005.

According to press release from the bank, Sinha would be in charge of the department of banking operations and development, department of banking supervision and the foreign exchange department. Das would be responsible for the department of non-banking supervision, rural planning and credit department, urban bank department, secretary's department and press relations division.

Das would also continue to be chief public information officer of the bank.

Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Award goes to Kumar Mangalam Birla
Mumbai: Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aditya Birla Group chairman, has received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2005.
Birla received the award from Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and will represent India at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2006.

Shobhana Bhartiya of HT Media won the award for information communication and entertainment category, while C P Jain of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) won the manager entrepreneur of the year award.

S S Badrinath, who has built Sankara Netralaya, bagged the lifetime achievement award.

Yes Bank CEO and managing director Rana Kapoor won the start-up entreprenuer award.

B N Kalyani of Bharat Forge bagged the award in the manufacturing category.

Dilip Sanghvi of Sun Pharmaceuticals was the winner in the healthcare and life sciences category and Harish Kumar Mittal of Mercator Lines won the award for services category.

Karan Bhatia is US deputy trade representative to India
New Delhi: Karan K Bhatia has been selected as US trade representative Rob Portman's deputy. Bhatia is accompanying Portman who is currently on a visit to India.

While this is Portman's first visit to India, Bhatia had been to India recently in connection with his assignments at the US department of transport. Officials recall that Bhatia played a key role in the India-US open skies agreement concluded recently.

Bhatia has also handled various assignments in the US department of commerce before he moved to the department of transport, diplomats said. He is quite familiar with India and was chosen as deputy USTR along with Susan Schwab, they added. Earlier, he was also partner at Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering.
