Govt. reviews norms for appointment of independent directors
New Delhi: The Government has amended the eligibility criteria for the job of independent directors on the board of public sector companies.

The Government has made "persons of eminence with proven track record from industry, business or agriculture" to be eligible for appointment as independent directors on the boards of PSUs.

The government has removed lawyers in the list. With agriculturalists and businessmen becoming eligible for the job, the Government says it will be able to accommodate public men, who did not fulfill the criteria earlier. The review of the eligibility criteria was affected after controversy erupted over the moves to appoint politicians who did not fulfill the conditions to become independent directors on the boards of Navratna companies.
