Whirlpool-Maytag
deal approved
Washington: Antitrust regulators have approved
Whirlpool's $1.7bn acquisition of competitor Maytag. The
deal is likely to form the world's largest appliance maker.
The US Justice Department that has been investigating
the deal for the past six months said the acquisition
"is not likely to reduce competition substantially."
The takeover will bring some of the best-known brands
in appliances under one umbrella. These include bringing
together Whirlpool's KitchenAid, Roper and Consul brands
with Maytag's Hoover vacuums and Jenn-Air, Amana and Magic
Chef products.

GM
in talks to sell stake in Japan's Isuzu
Tokyo: The beleaguered General Motors (GM) which
is selling its assets to get badly needed cash is in talks
to sell its stake in Isuzu Motors.
GM
holds 7.9 per cent stake in Isuzu and the move would highlight
GM's pullout from Japan. Earlier this month GM sold its
17 per cent share in Suzuki Motors for $2bn, leaving it
with 3 per cent. Last year GM sold its entire 20 per cent
stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars.
