Rice
urges Congress to approve U.S.-India nuclear deal
Washington: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
has urged the Congress to approve the nuclear energy deal
with India. She said the deal would achieve the objective
of reducing New Delhi's dependence on Iranian oil and
creating thousands of new American jobs.
In testimony Rice rejected critics who say that the agreement
undermines efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons
though she acknowledged that under the deal India would
be free to continue nuclear weapons production.
The agreement would permit transfer of foreign nuclear
energy reactors and fuel from US to India. While the agreement
has been controversial, members of the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee seemed largely supportive or neutral.
Later during an afternoon hearing Rice faced tougher questioning
before the House of Representatives International Relations
Committee, where even supporters of the deal expressed
grave concerns about India's ties with Iran and predicted
Congress would seek to enact unspecified conditions.
Iran, branded a state sponsor of terrorism by Washington,
says its nuclear program only aims to produce electricity.
Rice added that the nuclear deal, "may add as many
as 3,000 to 5,000 new direct jobs in the United States
and about 10,000 to 15,000 indirect jobs" as American
companies engage India in nuclear trade.
