Ratan Tata to be awarded Maharashtra Bhushan
Mumbai: Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has announced that Industrialist Ratan Tata will be awarded the 'Maharashtra Bhushan' award for contribution in the social and education field. The award consisting of a cash prize of Rs five lakh has earlier been presented to prominent personalities namely, litterateur late P L Deshpande, Lata Mangeshkar, Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Sachin Tendulkar, Bhimsen Joshi, Dr Abhay Bang and Rani Bang, Baba Amte and Dr Raghunath Mashelkar.

The decision to present the award to rattan Tata this year has been taken in acknowledgement to his contribution in social and educational field through institutes like TIFR, Tata Memorial Hospital, TISS, NCPA etc.

The award is presented every year on May 1, Maharashtra Day

Om Bhatt is new MD, SBI
Thiruvananthapuram: Om Bhatt, managing director, State Bank of Travancore (SBT), has been appointed as the managing director of State Bank of India (SBI). Bhatt started his career as a probationary officer with the SBI in 1972. Since then, he has held several key assignments at various offices of the bank.

He has been the scheme coordinator of branch computerisation at the central office of SBI. He was also the regional manager for the Jaipur Zone, general manager for the Lucknow zone and chief general manager of the North Zone, before joining SBT.

Bhatt has also served at the London and Washington offices of SBI, the spokesman added.

Punit Garg appointed as head of FLAG Telecom
Mumbai: Punit Garg has been appointed as president of FLAG Telecom in the place of Patrick Gallagher, who moves on to become its non-executive vice-chairman.

Garg is the first Indian to head FLAG, which is now part of the Reliance Communication Ventures group. Garg's appointment is expected to hasten the process of assimilation of the global carrier with its parent company under the new management and put it on a faster growth trajectory, said the statement.

Wipro appoints ex-Nortel honcho as additional director
Bangalore: Wipro has appointed appointed William Arthur (Bill) Owens, till recently chairman & CEO of Nortel Networks, as an additional director with effect from July 1, 2006.

Owens is on the boards of Polycom Inc, a media communications company; Daimler Chrysler AG, an automotive company; Sprint Wireline, a communications company; and AEA Investors LLC, an investment company.

O&M reshuffles creative department
Mumbai: Ogilvy and Mather has reshuffled its creative department. Two people from its Mumbai creative team, Malika Mehra and Amit Akali, are moving to Bangalore as creative heads. Both reportedly created the recent `Surprisingly SBI Campaign'.

The two creative heads would partner the Bangalore office head, Prateek Srivastava.

Ogilvy Bangalore handles Unilever (Beverages and Food), Titan Watches, SAB Miller, World Space, SAP, IBMand Madura Garments (Allen Solly).

The current creative head of Ogilvy Bangalore, Rajiv Rao, is moving to Ogilvy Mumbai to head the Hutch account.
